Southwark’s theatrical heritage started over 400 years ago. Shakespeare and Marlowe both performed their works first in Southwark playhouses. The theatres were closed by Parliament in 1642 and eventually demolished. Theatre in Southwark continues with performances in traditional theatre and at special venues.

10. NPV arts @ Magic Eye Theatre - New Peckham Varieties provides access to theatre for those who might be excluded. It offers tap dancing to technical theatre training, classes and workshops, or opportunities to become a member of the cast of a new musical show. NPV offers a Theatre Education Service. The Magic Eye Theatre is a workshop space, for scene building and rehearsals for young people's classes and workshops.
11. The First Rung Theatre Company - Theatre company which exists to help young drama graduates get their careers started. Productions, funding and contact information. Based in Dulwich.
12. Union Theatre - A theatre primarily for staging new works, it has a cafe and bar and features new companies and regular house productions.
