Havering

  ( 334 )

Havering is a Unitary Authority and the second largest Borough in Greater London, with a population of around 230,000 and an area approaching 40 square miles, half of which is in the Green Belt. Havering has a short border on the River Thames and parts of Thames Chase forest lie within the Borough. The name 'Havering' originated from the picturesque village of Havering-atte-Bower. Edward the Confessor is supposed to have passed through in the 11th Century and told a local resident / peasant to "Have Ring". Largest towns are Romford, Hornchurch and Upminster, which form an urban axis joined by the A124, essentially bisecting the Borough, into a northern and southern half. Rainham, the other big town in the south, is just off the A13. Other places within the urbanised parts are: Ardleigh Green, Collier Row, Corbetts Tey, Cranham, Elm Park, Emerson Park, Gidea Park, Hacton, Harold Hill, Harold Wood, Rise Park and Squirrels Heath. Rural satellites to the north are Havering-atte-Bower and Noak Hill, with North Ockendon to the east and Wennington to the south.
